Yimjenkimong is a small isolated village steeped in the traditions of the Ao tribe. It is located amongst the hills and forests in the district of Mokokchung, it is 16 to 20 Kms distance from Tuli town. The village has a population of about 800 persons accommodated in about 240 households. The village is at a height of 925 mt above mean sea level. The village Has electricity supply which is faltering. House Designs: The houses in the village are constructed in the traditional style. There are usually two to three rooms along with a large cooking space, which is placed partly on the firm soil and partly on wooden stilts so that the hill slope is negotiated. In the main house and the cooking space the floor is constructed of wooden planks, the walls and the ceiling is also of wooden planks. However the roof is of galvanized corrugated sheets. Almost all houses have a large open terrace, which is entirely constructed of bamboo. The bathing room is located on this terrace and the water just falls through the bamboo floor into the hill slope below. The toilet is a isolated and enclosed unit located below the terrace on the hill slope. Most of the houses harvest the rainfall on their roofs and keep it in large drums kept on the open terraces. Farming activities of the villagers: The fertile land of the village is located down hill at a trekking distance of about 10 kms. The farmland is located near a lake, which has abundant water. After harvesting the grains and other foodstuff is carried on the back of the people to the village. This is a very tiresome job and much of the food grain is lost as it falls during carriage. |
Many traditional cultural activities are performed in the village. They also have village sports regularly which are as follows: • Wrestling Culinary delicacies of the village: The Ao tribes of the village have immense culinary skills. They prepare food with chicken, pork, river fish and all types of vegetables available locally. Most of the food is cooked in bamboo shafts, which provides a special flavor to the dishes. Tea is served, all the time from a permanent container, which is placed, with water over the fire in the cooking room. Access to the Village: The important access point to the Mokokchung district is from the airport at Jorhat. From Jorhat road transport is available through Janji, Amguri to Tuli. From Tuli town, the village of Yimjenkimong is only 16 kms. The total distance from Jorhat is about 60kms. It is also possible to access the village from the Dimapur, Kohima, Wokha, Mokokchung side by road. Entry Formalities: Domestic tourist visiting Nagaland require to obtain Inner Line Permits issued by the Deputy Resident Commissioner at Nagaland House, New Delhi, Kolkata and Assistant Resident Commissioner, Guwahati, Shillong; Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung. A permit fee of Rs. 25.00 is realized from each applicant. Foreign Tourists are allowed to visit the eight districts headquarters and specified places for period of ten days which is extendable for another ten days provided they are in a group of four or more or married couples. |
