NEW SMILES
-

Over 30,000 children in India are born every year with cleft palates or cleft lips. Less than half of these children receive the treatment they need because they are too poor to either pay for the procedure, or to travel to places that offer these treatments free of cost. A cleft palate can be corrected or improved with a basic, two-step surgical procedure that takes as little as 45 minutes, on up to a more complex surgery of 5 to 6 hours.
North East India Project has formed a new partnership with Smile Train in India to help provide this type of medical treatment for children in the areas where we work are working. Smile Train recently won an Oscar for their documentary "Smile Pinki: A real-world fairy tale".

Below are two children, Alum and Tsuti, whom NEIP has been able to help thanks to your generous donations. In addition to helping with the surgery costs, your support also helps pay for transportation, food and lodging to-and-from the villages for the child and one parent.

Alum

7 year old girl
1st Grade

Alum never received treatment because her parents were told it would be better to wait until she got older (which isn't true) and also because they simply cannot afford to even leave their village for a few days.

Her surgery was a success, finished in April of 2009. She couldn't have done this without your generous support.

Tsutiyong

3 year old boy

Tsuti had not received treatment because his parents simply did not have the money to even leave their village for a few days.

His surgery was a success, finished in April of 2009. Tsuti could not have done this without your generous support.

You contributions help children like these be able to go to a Smile Train doctor and have this procedure done, before it's too late.  While Smile Train does not charge the families for the procedure, it does cost money for the procedue and for the child and a parent to travel from their village and back.  The average cost of $400.00 pays for the child's travel, meals, lodging, as well as the procedure given by a Smile Train doctor.

North East India Project gives a portion of your gift to Smile Train India to help them continue their great work.
